Ultra deluxe Nile cruises sit between the value five-star ships and the true luxury boats: newer or recently refurbished ships with larger cabins, more balconies, a better pool deck and more polished dining, at a fraction of the price of the Oberoi or Sanctuary fleets. Our ultra deluxe cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan for three or four nights, from $990 per person in a double cabin, with private sightseeing, an English-speaking guide, entrance fees and transfers included.
This page explains where ultra deluxe fits, compares the ships we book with their fares and departure days, and helps you decide whether the upgrade is worth it for your trip.
Nile cruise categories are set by operators rather than by an international standard, and nearly every ship calls itself five-star. We group the ships we book by what you actually get on board:
| Category | Typical 3-night fare per person | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|
| Deluxe | From $860 | Comfortable five-star ships at the best price |
| Ultra deluxe | About $990 to $1,630 | Newer ships, larger cabins, balconies, all-suite options |
| Luxury | About $1,700 to $3,000 | Suites, spa, fewer guests, butler-level service |
For most travelers, ultra deluxe is the sweet spot: a noticeably better ship than the deluxe group, for about $130 to $770 more per person for three nights, without the price of the luxury ships.
Published fares per person in a double cabin, September to April or September to May depending on the ship, including full board, private sightseeing, entrance fees and transfers.

| Mövenpick Sun Ray | Mon & Thu | $1,051 | $1,986 | One of the newest ships on the Nile |
| Amwaj Living Stone | Mon & Thu | $1,101 | $1,311 | A newer ship with junior, executive and royal suites |
| Steigenberger Regency | Wed & Sat | From $1,101 | Also sails a seven-night itinerary | |
| Sonesta Moon Goddess | Mon & Fri | $1,147 | $1,443 | 49 cabins, each with a private balcony |

We also book the Esplanade and the MayFlower (from $1,551), the Steigenberger Minerva (from $1,410), the Farah (from $1,200, selected departures) and the new Soleil, with fares quoted for your dates.

The route, the temples and the sightseeing are the same on every ship. What changes is how comfortable you are between visits, which matters more on a four-night cruise with long afternoons on board.
The luxury ships, such as the Oberoi Zahra, the Sonesta Star Goddess and Historia, cost about $1,960 to $3,000 for three nights. For that you get much larger suites, fewer guests, a spa and a higher level of service throughout. If those matter more than the price, see our luxury Nile cruises. If you mainly want a newer ship, a balcony and a good pool deck, an ultra deluxe ship gives you most of that for considerably less.
Suites are the first cabins to sell out on every ship, so book early for winter dates.

Each ship sails on two fixed days a week, so the easiest way to choose is often to start from your dates. The three-night cruise sails from Aswan to Luxor; the four-night cruise sails from Luxor to Aswan with an extra day on board and the Esna lock. Both visit Karnak and Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae. Our Luxor to Aswan cruise guide describes each stop, and the inclusions are the same as on our deluxe cruises: full board, private sightseeing with a guide, entrance fees and transfers.
October to April is the main season. For those months, book two to four months ahead, and three to six months ahead for Christmas, New Year and Easter, when the best cabins and suites go first. Our guide to the best time for a Nile cruise covers the seasons.
An ultra deluxe cruise pairs well with a few nights near the Pyramids. See our Pyramids and Nile cruise tours, our main Nile cruises page, or ask us for a tailor-made trip built around the ship you prefer.

Ultra deluxe ships are generally newer or recently refurbished, with larger cabins, more balconies, more suites and better pool decks. Our ultra deluxe fares start at $990 per person for three nights, against $860 on our deluxe ships.
No. Luxury ships such as the Oberoi Zahra, Sonesta Star Goddess and Historia have much larger suites, fewer guests, a spa and a higher level of service, and cost about $1,960 to $3,000 for three nights. Ultra deluxe ships offer a step up from deluxe at a lower price than luxury.
Our ultra deluxe cruises cost about $990 to $1,630 per person in a double cabin for three nights, and about $1,180 to $2,010 for four nights, including full board, private sightseeing, entrance fees and transfers.
The Sonesta Moon Goddess has a private balcony on all 49 cabins. The Tulip has Juliet balconies on its 40 cabins and eight terrace suites with private outdoor seating. On other ships, balconies depend on the cabin category.
It depends on what matters most. For balconies, the Sonesta Moon Goddess; for an all-suite ship, the Jaz Senator; for a newer ship, the Mövenpick Sun Ray or Amwaj Living Stone; and for the lowest fare with a pool, the Steigenberger Legacy or Royale.
Yes. The Jaz Senator is an all-suite ship, which also makes it a good choice for a private charter for a family or group.
On a four-night cruise with long afternoons on board, many guests find it is. Suites give you more space and, on several ships, a private lounge or outdoor seating. They are limited on every ship, so book early if you want one.
Each ship sails on two fixed days a week. Most sail on Mondays and Fridays or Mondays and Thursdays; the Steigenberger Regency and Alexander the Great sail on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Our table shows the days for every ship.
The three-night cruise from Aswan to Luxor suits shorter trips. The four-night cruise from Luxor to Aswan adds a day on board and the Esna lock, and gets more value from a better ship.
Meet and assist, private transfers, your cabin with full board, private sightseeing in Luxor and Aswan with an English-speaking guide, entrance fees in the itinerary, and service charges and taxes. International flights, visas, drinks, optional tours and tips are extra.
Couples often choose a ship with outdoor space in the cabin, such as the Sonesta Moon Goddess or a terrace suite on the Tulip, or a suite on the Jaz Senator or Tosca.
For October to April, two to four months ahead is a good guide. For Christmas, New Year and Easter, book three to six months ahead, as suites and balcony cabins sell out first.
Yes. Abu Simbel can be added by flight or private drive from Aswan, and a sunrise hot air balloon flight over Luxor’s West Bank fits into the Luxor day.
Yes. Most guests add two or three nights in Cairo for the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. We can include the flights or sleeper train and build the trip around your chosen ship.
