Choosing a Deluxe Nile Cruise

By Delta Tours EgyptLast updated 5 min read

A deluxe Nile cruise is the value end of five-star river cruising: a comfortable ship with a pool on the sun deck, full board, and the same route and temples as the most expensive boats on the river, for a much lower fare. Our deluxe Nile cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan for three or four nights, from $860 per person in a double cabin, with private sightseeing, an English-speaking guide, entrance fees and transfers included.

This page compares the deluxe ships we book, explains what the fare covers, how three and four nights differ, which days the ships sail, and how to get the best price.

What Deluxe Means on the Nile

Almost every cruise ship between Luxor and Aswan is described as five-star, so the label alone does not separate them. In practice the ships fall into a few groups, and “deluxe” is the first of the five-star groups: well-run ships with standard cabins of a good size, a restaurant, a lounge and a sun deck with a pool. They do not have the large suites, small guest numbers or spa facilities of the luxury ships, and they cost a fraction of the price.

Category Typical 3-night fare per person Best for
Deluxe From $860 Value, first-time visitors, families
Ultra deluxe About $990 to $1,630 Newer ships, balconies, more space
Luxury About $1,700 to $3,000 Suites, spa, fewer guests

If you are weighing an upgrade, our ultra deluxe Nile cruises and luxury Nile cruises pages compare the ships in those groups.

Deluxe Nile Cruise Ships and Prices

Published fares per person, September to April, including full board, private sightseeing, entrance fees and transfers.

Ship Sails 3 nights, double 4 nights, double 3 nights, single
Al Hambra Mon & Thu $860 $1,012 $1,297
Royal La Terrasse Mon & Thu $860 $1,012 $1,297
Blue Shadow Wed & Sat $860 $1,012 $1,297
Renaissance Wed & Sat $860 $1,012 $1,297
Salima Mon & Fri $860 $1,012 $1,297
Farida Mon & Fri $860 $1,012 $1,297
Moon Dance Mon & Fri $860 $1,012 $1,297
Nile Capital Mon & Fri $860 $1,012 $1,297
Salacia Mon & Fri $1,013 $1,313 $1,569
Jaz Crown Jubilee Mon & Thu On request for your dates

A few ships stand out within the group. The Al Hambra has some of the largest suites in its class and a spa with an indoor pool; the Renaissance offers cabins with private balconies or large windows; the Blue Shadow is one of the newer ships in the group; and the Salacia, a step up in price, is known for its attention to detail and food.

Deluxe Nile cruise prices per person: triple cabin $790, double cabin $860, single cabin $1,297 for three nights

Three Nights or Four?

Both versions visit the same main sites. The three-night cruise sails north from Aswan to Luxor; the four-night cruise sails south from Luxor to Aswan and gives you an extra day on board, a slower pace and the passage through the Esna lock.

3 nights 4 nights
Direction Aswan to Luxor Luxor to Aswan
Fare per person, double From $860 From $1,012
Cost per night About $287 About $253
Best for Short trips and tight schedules A more relaxed pace and time on the river

The fourth night adds only about $150 per person, which makes it the better value per night if your schedule allows.

The Route, Day by Day

A typical four-night deluxe cruise from Luxor runs like this; the three-night cruise covers the same sites in the opposite direction, starting in Aswan.

  1. Day 1, Luxor. Board at lunchtime, then visit the temples of Karnak and Luxor on the East Bank.
  2. Day 2, West Bank and Esna. The Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon, then sail through the Esna lock.
  3. Day 3, Edfu and Kom Ombo. The Temple of Horus at Edfu, then the double temple of Kom Ombo at sunset.
  4. Day 4, Aswan. The Temple of Philae and the High Dam, with time for a felucca sail or a Nubian village visit.
  5. Day 5, Aswan. Disembark after breakfast, or add an early trip to Abu Simbel.

Our Luxor to Aswan cruise guide describes each site in more detail.

  • Your cabin with full board on the ship
  • Private sightseeing in Luxor and Aswan, as listed in the itinerary
  • An English-speaking tour guide
  • Entrance fees to the sites in the itinerary
  • Service charges and taxes

What costs extra

  • Optional tours such as Abu Simbel or a hot air balloon flight over Luxor
  • Drinks and anything not listed in the program
  • Tips for the crew and your guide

Choosing a Cabin on a Deluxe Ship

  • Ask for an upper deck. Cabins higher up have better views and sit further from the waterline.
  • Window or balcony. Most deluxe cabins have a large window; if a balcony matters to you, choose the Renaissance or look at our ultra deluxe ships.
  • Travelling as three. A triple cabin brings the three-night fare down to $790 per person on most of these ships.
  • Travelling alone. A single cabin costs $1,297 for three nights on most deluxe ships, rather than the double fare plus a large supplement.

How to Get the Best Deluxe Nile Cruise Fare

  • Match the ship to your dates. Ships sail on fixed days, so choosing by departure day often gives you more choice than choosing the ship first.
  • Take the four-night cruise if you have time: it costs less per night.
  • Share a triple cabin if you are a family or three friends.
  • Book early for winter. October to April is the main season, and Christmas, New Year and Easter fill first. Our guide to the best time for a Nile cruise explains the seasons.

Is a deluxe Nile cruise really five-star?

Yes, the deluxe ships we book are rated five-star and offer air-conditioned cabins with private bathrooms, full-board dining, a lounge and a sun deck with a pool. What they do not have are the large suites, small guest numbers and spa facilities of the luxury ships, which is why they cost much less.

How much does a deluxe Nile cruise cost?

Our deluxe Nile cruises cost from $860 per person in a double cabin for three nights and from $1,012 for four nights, September to April. That includes full board, private sightseeing with a guide, entrance fees and transfers.

Is the four-night cruise worth it over three nights?

For most travelers, yes. The fourth night adds about $150 per person, works out cheaper per night, and gives you a slower pace, more time on the river and the passage through the Esna lock. If your trip is short, the three-night cruise covers the same main sites.

Which days do deluxe Nile cruises depart?

Each ship sails on two fixed days a week. Al Hambra, Royal La Terrasse and Jaz Crown Jubilee sail on Mondays and Thursdays; Blue Shadow and Renaissance on Wednesdays and Saturdays; and Salima, Farida, Moon Dance, Nile Capital and Salacia on Mondays and Fridays.

Are entrance fees and a guide included?

Yes. Our deluxe cruise fares include private sightseeing in Luxor and Aswan as listed in the itinerary, an English-speaking tour guide and the entrance fees to those sites. Optional tours such as Abu Simbel and special tomb tickets are extra.

Are drinks included on a deluxe Nile cruise?

Meals on board are included (full board), but drinks are not part of the fare and are paid on board.

Do deluxe ships have cabins with balconies?

Most deluxe cabins have a large window rather than a balcony. The Renaissance offers cabins with private balconies or large windows. If a balcony is important to you, our ultra deluxe ships include several with balconies on every cabin.

How much does a single cabin cost?

On most of our deluxe ships a single cabin costs $1,297 for three nights and $1,552 for four nights. On the Salacia it is $1,569 for three nights.

Is there a cheaper option for three people sharing?

Yes. A triple cabin costs $790 per person for three nights and $934 per person for four nights on most deluxe ships.

Can I add Abu Simbel or a hot air balloon ride?

Yes. Both can be added to a deluxe cruise: Abu Simbel by flight or private drive from Aswan, and a sunrise balloon flight over Luxor’s West Bank on the Luxor day.

Does the cruise start in Luxor or Aswan?

The three-night cruise starts in Aswan and ends in Luxor; the four-night cruise starts in Luxor and ends in Aswan. We arrange the transfers at both ends.

When is the best time for a deluxe Nile cruise?

October to April is the most comfortable season, with warm days and cool evenings. Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest weeks, so book well ahead for those dates.

What is the difference between a deluxe and an ultra deluxe Nile cruise?

Ultra deluxe ships are generally newer or more recently refurbished, with larger cabins, more balconies and better facilities, for a three-night fare of about $990 to $1,630 per person. Deluxe ships offer the same route and sightseeing at a lower price.

Can I combine a deluxe cruise with Cairo?

Yes. Most guests add two or three nights in Cairo for the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, travelling south by flight or sleeper train. Our Pyramids and Nile cruise tours include this, or we can build a tailor-made trip.
