Planning an Egypt Family Holiday

By Delta Tours EgyptLast updated 6 min read

Our Egypt family tours are private trips planned around the way families actually travel: shorter touring days, a river stretch where nobody has to repack, and beach time at the end so children and parents recover before the flight home. The flagship is our 14-day family adventure, which pairs Cairo and Luxor with five nights on a small sailing boat and a Red Sea finish in Sharm El Sheikh, and several shorter tours suit families just as well.

Below you can compare those tours, see how a family itinerary is paced, and find practical advice on heat, tomb access and room setups before you choose.

Ancient Egypt Revealed is priced by group size rather than by season, which often works in a family’s favor once four or five of you travel together. The other prices are per person as published on each tour, and the family tour’s current rates are on its own page. Send us your children’s ages and we will price your exact family, room setup included, in one quote.

Our 14-Day Family Tour, Day by Day

A Family Egyptian Adventure is the trip we built specifically for parents and children. It keeps the headline sights, then slows down on the river before ending by the sea.

  • Days 1 to 3, Cairo. Arrival, then the Giza Pyramids with Saqqara on one day and the Grand Egyptian Museum with the Khan El Khalili bazaar on the next. Splitting the two keeps each day manageable.
  • Days 4 and 5, Luxor. Two days for the temples and royal tombs of ancient Thebes rather than one rushed day.
  • Days 6 to 10, the Nile by dahabiya. Five nights on a traditional sailing boat from Esna toward Aswan, with El Kab and Edfu, a day titled “Sail and Swim”, the quarries of Gebel Silsileh and Kom Ombo.
  • Day 11, the end of the river. A last day of sightseeing in the south before the flight to the coast.
  • Days 12 to 14, Sharm El Sheikh. Arrival afternoon, a full free day on the Red Sea, and the flight home via Cairo.

A dahabiya is much smaller than a standard cruise ship. It can moor at quiet islands and stop at Gebel Silsileh, where larger vessels do not call, which means shorter walks from boat to site and fewer crowds around younger travelers. Our dahabiya Nile cruise guide explains this style of sailing in more depth.

Which Family Tour Fits Your Family?

Two weeks, with time to slow down

The family adventure and the Royal Egypt Tour both run fourteen days. Pick the family tour for the small-boat river days and swim stops; pick Royal Egypt if you want Abu Simbel, a full-size cruise ship and four nights at the beach rather than two. Its long beach stay suits a family group with a wide age range, because everyone gets time to recover from the early temple mornings.

Ten days with a beach finish

Nile Dream and Nile Legend follow a similar shape: Cairo, a three-night cruise and the Red Sea. Nile Dream uses flights and five-star resorts. Nile Legend saves money with an overnight sleeper train and a road transfer of about four hours to Hurghada, and its triple-room rate helps families of three.

A week or a little more

Ancient Egypt Revealed gives you four nights on one ship and Abu Simbel in eight days. TITI Dive and ISIS Dive skip the cruise and send you to the coast after Luxor, which suits children who would rather swim than sit on a sun deck. If you prefer to sleep in hotels throughout, our Egypt tours without a Nile cruise lists the land-based options.

Pacing a Family Trip in Egypt

The biggest mistake families make is copying an adult itinerary. A few principles help:

  • One major site block per day. A morning at the pyramids followed by a pool afternoon is more memorable for a nine-year-old than a third temple before dinner.
  • Use the boat as a base. On a cruise or dahabiya you unpack once, meals are taken care of, and the temples come to you. Afternoons on deck double as rest time.
  • Fly the long legs if budget allows. Sleeper trains are part of the fun for some children, but a domestic flight shortens travel days considerably for toddlers.
  • Put the beach last. Sightseeing while everyone is fresh, then resting before the flight home, works better than the reverse.
  • Lean on the private guide. Sightseeing on our packages is private with an English-speaking guide, so the pace, stops and length of each visit can follow your children rather than a group timetable.

Heat, Tombs and Other Practical Points

When to go with children

Southern Egypt gets very hot in summer. In Luxor, average highs reach about 105°F (41°C) in July, while January averages about 72°F (22°C), and the cool season runs roughly from December to late February. Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest weeks, so book early for those dates. If summer is your only window, plan early starts, a long midday break and plenty of water. Our guide to the best season to visit Egypt goes through each month.

The Valley of the Kings with small children

The royal tombs are cut into the hillsides, so visiting them means walking down sloping corridors and steps, and some are harder to reach than others. The tomb of Thutmose III, for example, sits high in a cliff and is reached by a staircase and then a steep descending passage. With small children or anyone who finds stairs difficult, ask your guide to choose tombs with gentler access and visit early, before the valley warms up. Our Valley of the Kings guide describes the site.

Rooms and beds

Most of our tours publish a triple-room rate, which suits a family of three. Families of four or more usually need two rooms or cabins, and we can price the combination that works for you when you send us your children’s ages.

The Red Sea finish

Ending in Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada or Sahl Hasheesh gives children something to look forward to through the temple days. Our Egypt and Red Sea tours page compares every beach ending we offer.

Chat on WhatsApp+20 109 002 1560

Do you offer private Egypt family tours?

Yes. Sightseeing on our packages is private, with your own English-speaking guide and vehicle, so the day can follow your children’s pace. Our 14-day Family Egyptian Adventure was designed specifically for families.

How much does an Egypt family holiday cost?

It depends on length and comfort level. The 14-day Royal Egypt Tour starts at $7,597 per person sharing a double room, while ISIS Dive costs $1,044 per person in a double room or $940 in a triple from October to April. The family adventure’s rates are on its tour page.

How do you price a family trip?

Send us your children’s ages and how you want to share rooms or cabins, and we will quote the whole family in one price. Most tours also publish a triple-room rate, which suits a family of three.

What is the best age to take children to Egypt?

There is no fixed rule, but children who can manage a few hours of walking and some stairs get the most from the temples and tombs. Younger children enjoy a trip built with shorter touring days, boat time and a beach finish.

Is a Nile cruise a good idea for families?

Yes, for most families. You unpack once, meals are on board and the temples are reached from the boat. A dahabiya, as on our 14-day family tour, is smaller and adds swim stops and quiet island moorings.

Can we finish our family trip on the beach?

Yes. Several of our family-friendly tours end on the Red Sea, in Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada or Sahl Hasheesh, with two to four nights at a resort depending on the tour.

Is Egypt too hot for children in summer?

Luxor averages highs of about 105°F (41°C) in July, so summer trips need early starts, a long midday break and plenty of water. The cooler months from December to February are easier with young children.

Can you adapt a tour for our family?

Yes. We can add nights, change hotels, switch trains for flights or build a fully tailor-made route around your children’s ages and interests.
