Egypt’s Nile River Cruise – Best Time to Go
The best time for a Nile cruise is October to April, when afternoons on the river between Luxor and Aswan are warm rather than scorching and evenings on deck are cool. November, February and March give the most comfortable mix of weather and crowds, December and January are the coolest but busiest months, and May to September is the cheapest time to sail if you can handle temperatures above 40°C (104°F).
This guide looks at the cruise itself: what the weather feels like on deck and at the temples, when ships and dahabiyas sail, which weeks sell out, and whether three or four nights suits your season. For Egypt as a whole, including Cairo and the Red Sea, see our guide to the best time to visit Egypt.

Nile Cruise Weather by Month: Luxor and Aswan
Every standard cruise sails the stretch between Luxor and Aswan, so these are the two places that matter. The figures are long-term average daily highs and lows. Aswan is a degree or two warmer than Luxor for most of the year, and both cities cool quickly after sunset because of the dry desert air.

Why the Season Matters More on a Cruise
A Nile cruise mixes two kinds of time: hours at the temples and hours on the boat. The season changes both.
At the temples
Shore visits follow a fixed rhythm. The Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut are usually visited in the morning, Edfu early in the day, and Kom Ombo late in the afternoon or at dusk. The West Bank in Luxor is a sun trap of bare limestone with little shade, which is why a January morning there feels so different from one in June. In summer, ships and guides move visits earlier to beat the heat, which means very early starts.
On deck
Much of the pleasure of a cruise is sitting on the sun deck watching palm groves, villages and farmland slide past. From October to April this is comfortable for most of the day. In December and January the late afternoon can be breezy and cool, so bring a fleece, and expect the sun-deck pool to feel cold in midwinter. From May to September the deck is pleasant only in the early morning and after sunset, and the pool comes into its own. Air-conditioned cabins and lounges make the hottest hours bearable.
Dahabiya Season: October to April
A dahabiya is a traditional two-masted sailing boat carrying a small number of guests. Its season follows the wind and the weather: October to April is the main period, when the north wind fills the sails for the trip upstream and the open decks are pleasant all day. December and January bring the coolest evenings, March and April the warmest. Summer sailings are hot, and some boats do not operate then. Our dahabiya cruises sail for five nights from Esna to Aswan, departing on Mondays, from $3,500 per person in a double cabin. Because the boats are small, the best weeks fill early.
Christmas, New Year and Easter
The two weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest on the Nile. Traveling then means the highest fares, full ships and the most crowded temples of the year. Easter is the second peak, especially with European families. In 2027, Western Easter falls on 28 March and Coptic Easter on 2 May.
Other dates to know:
- Abu Simbel sun alignment, 22 February and 22 October: the sun lights the inner sanctuary of the Great Temple. Cruises ending in Aswan around these dates make a good base for the trip to Abu Simbel, but transport is in high demand.
- Ramadan 2027, expected about 8 February to 8 March: cruises run as normal and the food on board is unaffected. Some site hours are shorter.
Three or Four Nights, by Season
Standard cruises between Luxor and Aswan run for three or four nights. The three-night cruise sails north from Aswan to Luxor; the four-night cruise sails south from Luxor to Aswan and gives you an extra day on the river. Both cover the same main temples. Our Luxor and Aswan cruise guide sets out both itineraries day by day.
- Winter (December to February): four nights is worth it. Days are short and cool, so the extra day lets you spend more time on deck in the warm hours rather than squeezing touring and sailing together.
- Spring and autumn: either works. The fourth night costs about $150 per person extra on our deluxe ships, and it is cheaper per night.
- Summer (May to September): three nights is often enough. Most sightseeing happens in the early morning, and many travelers prefer to spend the extra day in Cairo or on the Red Sea.
What a Nile Cruise Costs by Season
Our published ship fares apply from September to April (to May on some ships). As a guide, per person in a double cabin:
| Ship category | 3 nights | 4 nights |
|---|---|---|
| Deluxe ships | From $860 | From $1,012 |
| Ultra deluxe ships | From $990 | From $1,177 |
| Luxury ships | About $1,700 to $3,000 | Varies by ship |
| Dahabiya (5 nights) | $3,500 | |
Fares include full board on the ship, private sightseeing with a guide, entrance fees to the sites in the itinerary, and transfers. Packages that combine a cruise with Cairo are cheaper from May to September: the 9-day King Tut tour is $1,460 per person from October to April and $1,401 from May to September.
When to Book Your Nile Cruise
- Christmas, New Year and Easter: three to six months ahead. Suites and balcony cabins go first.
- October to April: two to four months ahead.
- Summer: a few weeks is usually enough.
Each ship sails on two fixed days a week, so it is often easier to start from your travel dates and see which ships depart then. You can compare them all on our Nile river cruises page.
FAQ
What is the best time for a Nile cruise?
October to April. November, February and March offer warm days, cool evenings and fewer crowds than the Christmas period.
What is the Nile cruise weather like in December and January?
Sunny and mild, with highs around 23°C to 24°C (73°F to 75°F) in Luxor and Aswan. Mornings and evenings drop below 10°C (50°F), so bring warm layers for the deck and early tours.
Is a Nile cruise in summer too hot?
It is very hot, with highs of 40°C to 42°C (104°F to 108°F). It is manageable if you tour early, rest in the afternoon and use the pool, and prices are lower.
Can you do a dahabiya cruise in summer?
The main dahabiya season is October to April. Summer sailings are hot, and some boats do not operate in those months.
Should I choose three or four nights?
Four nights gives a slower pace and costs less per night; it suits the cooler months best. Three nights covers the same main temples and suits shorter trips and summer travel.
How far ahead should I book a Nile cruise for Christmas?
Three to six months ahead. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks on the river.
