Choosing a Luxury Nile Cruise

By Delta Tours EgyptLast updated 6 min read

A luxury Nile cruise is less about the route, which every ship shares, and more about how you travel it: a larger cabin or a suite with its own terrace, fewer guests on board, a kitchen that cooks rather than reheats, and a crew with time for you. Our luxury Nile cruise packages pair five-star ships such as the Oberoi Zahra, the Oberoi Philae and the Sonesta Star Goddess with private sightseeing, so the guiding at each temple is yours alone.

This page explains what separates a luxury ship from a standard five-star one, compares the ships we book, answers the question of how private a Nile cruise can be, and shows what luxury Nile cruise holidays cost per night.

What Makes a Nile Cruise Luxury?

Many ships on the Nile are rated five-star, so the rating alone tells you little. These are the details that make the difference in practice:

  • Space. Larger cabins, suites with sitting areas, and on some ships a private terrace or balcony for every guest.
  • Fewer guests. Luxury ships tend to carry fewer passengers, so the sun deck, the pool and the restaurant rarely feel crowded.
  • Service. More crew per guest, butler service on the top ships, and more attentive dining.
  • Wellbeing. A spa, a heated pool or a fitness room on board, useful on the long sailing afternoons.
  • Guiding. On our packages every visit in Luxor and Aswan is privately guided by an Egyptologist, rather than a ship group of thirty following a paddle.

Luxury, Ultra Deluxe, Deluxe or Dahabiya?

Egyptian cruise operators use several labels, and they overlap. This table shows how we group the ships we book, so you can go straight to the right page.

Category What to expect Typical 3-night fare Browse
Luxury Suites, small guest numbers, spa, fine dining About $1,700 to $3,000 per person This page
Ultra deluxe Newer five-star ships, larger cabins, many with balconies About $900 to $1,600 per person Ultra deluxe cruises
Deluxe Comfortable, well-priced five-star ships From about $790 per person Deluxe cruises
Dahabiya Traditional sailing boat with a handful of cabins $3,500 per person for 5 nights Dahabiya cruises

For an overview of every option, including Cairo and cruise holidays, see our main Nile cruises in Egypt page.

The Best Luxury Nile Cruise Ships We Book

There is no single best luxury Nile cruise; the right ship depends on whether you value space, a quiet atmosphere, food or price. These are the ships our guests choose most often at the top of the market. Fares are our published rates per person in a double cabin for three nights, including transfers, private sightseeing and full board.

Ship What stands out 3 nights from
Oberoi Philae A small Oberoi ship of about twenty cabins and suites, with a pool and spa; also sails a six-night itinerary from Luxor $2,992 for 4 nights
Oberoi Zahra Oberoi’s larger ship, with spacious cabins, two suites, a pool and a spa $2,245
Historia A contemporary luxury ship at the top of our price range $3,000
Sonesta Star Goddess An all-suite ship where every suite has its own private terrace $1,960
Sonesta Sun Goddess An all-suite ship with balconies, smaller and quieter than most $1,960
Jaz Regent A refined five-star ship with a triple-cabin option for families $1,851
Mövenpick Royal Lily A comfortable Mövenpick ship at a lower luxury price point $1,675

We also book the Sanctuary fleet, including the Sun Boat IV and the Nile Adventurer, and the Sonesta St. George I. Rates for these ships are quoted on request for your dates.

Are Nile Cruises Private?

On a cruise ship you share the boat, the restaurant and the sun deck with other guests; that is true even of the most exclusive Nile ships. What can be private is everything that happens on land. On our luxury Nile cruise packages:

  • Your Egyptologist guide is yours alone, so you set the pace at each temple and ask as many questions as you like.
  • A private air-conditioned vehicle takes you between the ship, the sites and the airport.
  • Timings can shift: an earlier start at the Valley of the Kings, a longer stop at Karnak, or a felucca in Aswan instead of a rest on board.

If you want the whole boat to yourselves, a dahabiya can be chartered privately for a family or a group of friends. This is the closest thing to a private Nile cruise. For trips that are private from start to finish, see our private Egypt tours.

Luxury Nile Cruise Itineraries: 3, 4 and 6 Nights

Luxury ships follow the same route as every Nile cruise, between Luxor and Aswan. Three nights from Aswan to Luxor is the shortest option, four nights from Luxor to Aswan gives a more relaxed pace with the Esna lock included, and the Oberoi Philae also offers six nights from Luxor for travelers who want time on the water itself. Our Luxor to Aswan cruise guide describes each day in detail.

Popular additions include a flight or private drive to Abu Simbel, a sunrise balloon flight over Luxor’s West Bank, and the special tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, which need a separate ticket.

How Much Does a Luxury Nile Cruise Cost?

Across the ships on this page, a luxury Nile cruise costs roughly $550 to $1,000 per person per night in a double cabin, with sightseeing, transfers and full board included. The chart below divides each ship’s published three-night fare by three to make them easy to compare.

Chart comparing luxury Nile cruise prices per person per night by ship

Four things move the price:

  • The ship. The Oberoi ships and Historia sit at the top of the range; Mövenpick and Jaz ships offer luxury at a lower price.
  • The number of nights. Four nights costs more in total, but often less per night than three.
  • The cabin. Single travelers pay a supplement; on the Oberoi Zahra, three nights in a single cabin is $3,360. Some ships offer a triple cabin that lowers the price per person.
  • The season. Our published rates cover the main season from September or October to April. Christmas, New Year and Easter are the most sought-after weeks.

Choosing Your Cabin or Suite

  • Ask for an upper deck. Higher cabins have better views and sit further from the waterline and the engines.
  • Decide whether a balcony matters. On all-suite ships such as the Sonesta Star Goddess every suite has outdoor space; on other ships it is limited to certain categories.
  • Book suites early. Each ship has only a few, and they are the first to go for winter dates.
  • Tell us about mobility needs. Not every ship has a lift, and we will match you with one that suits.

When to Book a Luxury Nile Cruise

October to April is the most comfortable time to sail, with warm days and cool evenings. For those months, confirm three to six months ahead; the best suites on the Oberoi and Sonesta ships sell out first, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter. Our guide to the best time for a Nile cruise explains the seasons in detail.

Luxury Nile Cruise Holidays With Cairo

Most guests combine their cruise with a few nights in Cairo for the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Our luxury Egypt tours do this as complete holidays with domestic flights included: the Ancient Egypt Revealed journey uses the Le Fayan, and the Royal Egypt Tour combines the Four Seasons Nile Plaza, a cruise on the MayFair and the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract in Aswan. For hotels in Cairo, see our guide to the best hotels with a Pyramid view.

Chat on WhatsApp+20 109 002 1560

Are Nile cruises private, or do you share the ship?

You share the ship, the restaurant and the sun deck with other guests. On our packages, however, your sightseeing in Luxor and Aswan is private, with your own Egyptologist and vehicle. For a fully private boat, consider chartering a dahabiya.

Can I have a private Egyptologist on a five-star Nile cruise?

Yes. Every luxury Nile cruise package on this page includes private sightseeing with an English-speaking Egyptologist for the visits listed in the itinerary, rather than a shared ship group.

Which is the best luxury Nile cruise?

It depends on what you value. The Oberoi Philae and Oberoi Zahra are the choice for space and service, the Sonesta Star Goddess gives every suite a private terrace, and Mövenpick and Jaz ships offer a luxury experience at a lower price. Tell us your priorities and we will recommend a ship.

How much is a luxury Nile cruise per person?

Our published three-night fares on luxury ships run from $1,675 to $3,000 per person in a double cabin, which is roughly $550 to $1,000 per night. The price includes full board, private sightseeing, entrance fees and transfers.

What is included in a luxury Nile cruise package?

Airport meet and assist, private transfers, your cabin or suite with full board, private sightseeing in Luxor and Aswan with an Egyptologist, entrance fees in the itinerary, and service charges and taxes. Flights, visas, drinks, optional excursions and tips are extra.

Do luxury Nile cruise cabins have balconies?

On all-suite ships such as the Sonesta Star Goddess and Sonesta Sun Goddess every suite has outdoor space. On other ships, balconies or terraces are limited to certain cabin categories, so ask when you book.

How many nights should a luxury Nile cruise be?

Four nights from Luxor to Aswan is the most popular choice. Three nights suits a shorter trip, and the Oberoi Philae offers six nights for a slower journey.

Can I add Abu Simbel or special tombs to my cruise?

Yes. Abu Simbel can be added by private car or a short flight from Aswan, and special tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens can be added with a separate ticket. We include them in your quote on request.

Is alcohol included on luxury Nile cruises?

Drinks outside the included meals are generally charged on board, including alcohol. Policies vary by ship, so ask us about the ship you are considering.

What is the difference between a luxury cruise and a dahabiya?

A luxury cruise ship offers suites, a pool, a spa and a three- or four-night route. A dahabiya is a small sailing boat with a handful of cabins that takes five nights from Esna to Aswan and stops at sites the big ships pass by.

Is a luxury Nile cruise suitable for older travelers or families?

Yes. Sightseeing is by private vehicle and the ships are comfortable bases between visits. Some temples involve steps and uneven ground, and not every ship has a lift, so tell us about any mobility needs.

What is the best time for a luxury Nile cruise?

October to April is the most comfortable season for sightseeing. Cruises also sail in summer, when the heat is strong and sightseeing starts very early.

How far ahead should I book a luxury Nile cruise?

Book three to six months ahead for travel between October and April. Suites are limited on every ship and sell out first, especially at Christmas, New Year and Easter.

Can I combine a luxury Nile cruise with Cairo?

Yes. Our luxury Egypt tours combine five-star hotels in Cairo with a Nile cruise and include domestic flights, or we can build a tailor-made itinerary around the ship you choose.
