Egypt Itinerary: 7, 10 & 14 Days for First-Time Private Travelers

Treasures of the Pharaohs – 7 Day Luxury Egypt Journey

For a first private trip, 7 days covers Cairo, Giza and a short Nile cruise, 10 days adds a full 4-night cruise and Abu Simbel without rushing, and 14 days lets you add a Red Sea beach stay or extra time in Luxor. Below are three day-by-day plans built around real transfer times, each paired with a Delta tour that follows the same shape.

Every plan assumes you fly into Cairo, use domestic flights for the long north–south hops, and travel with a private guide and driver. Swap pieces in and out as you like; the transfer logic is what matters most.

How many days do you need in Egypt?

The honest answer depends on one decision: whether you want Upper Egypt (Luxor, Aswan and the Nile between them) or just Cairo. Cairo and Giza alone fill three or four days well. Once you add Luxor and Aswan, you are covering a stretch of river that a cruise ship takes three or four nights to sail, plus the travel to get there.

  • 5 days or fewer: Cairo plus one other city. You will see the highlights but spend a real share of the trip in transit.
  • 7 days: the minimum for Cairo plus a Nile cruise. It works, with early starts and one or two long days.
  • 10 days: the most comfortable length for a first visit. You get a 4-night cruise, Abu Simbel and a slower final day in Cairo.
  • 14 days: room for a beach, Alexandria, or simply more unhurried time at the temples.

Season changes the math too. In the hottest months, sightseeing in Luxor and Aswan shifts to early mornings, so each day holds less. Our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Egypt explains how weather affects pacing.

How do you get between Cairo, Luxor and Aswan?

Distances in Egypt are long, so the way you cover them shapes every itinerary. There are two realistic options for private travelers.

Domestic flights

A direct flight from Cairo to Luxor takes a little over an hour in the air. The flight itself is short, but you should still budget a half day once you add the hotel transfer, airport check-in and the drive at the other end. This is why the plans below never pair a flight with a full day of sightseeing.

The overnight sleeper train

Sleeper trains run nightly from Cairo and Giza to Luxor and Aswan. Based on the 2026 timetable published on Seat61’s Cairo to Luxor and Aswan sleeper train page, the run to Luxor takes roughly 9.5 to 10.5 hours, and the run to Aswan roughly 12.5 to 14 hours depending on the train. The same page notes the service has been operated by Abela Trains since 2023.

The overnight sleeper train links Cairo with Luxor and Aswan.

The train saves a hotel night and suits travelers who enjoy rail journeys. The trade-off is sleep quality and arrival times that can run into mid-morning. If your trip is 7 days, we usually recommend flying. On 9 or 10 days, the train becomes a fair choice; Delta’s King Tut 9-day tour with a 4-night Nile cruise and sleeper train is built around it, from $1296 per person.

7-day Egypt itinerary: Cairo, Giza and a 3-night Nile cruise

This is the classic one-week private Egypt tour. It uses a 3-night cruise sailing downstream from Aswan to Luxor, which fits a week better than the 4-night version.

Private tour guests at the Great Pyramid of Giza
Every plan starts with the Pyramids of Giza.
  1. Day 1: Arrive in Cairo. Airport meet-and-greet, transfer to your hotel and an early night.
  2. Day 2: Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Morning at the Giza pyramids and the Sphinx, then the Grand Egyptian Museum next door. Allow most of the afternoon for the museum; its collection is large.
  3. Day 3: Fly to Aswan and board your ship. Morning flight south, then embark. Afternoon visits around Aswan, such as Philae Temple, depending on the ship’s program.
  4. Day 4: Sail north to Kom Ombo and Edfu. A slower day on the river with temple stops along the bank.
  5. Day 5: Arrive in Luxor. Karnak and Luxor Temple on the East Bank.
  6. Day 6: West Bank, then fly to Cairo. Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple in the morning, disembark, and take an evening flight back to Cairo.
  7. Day 7: Depart. Transfer to Cairo airport. If your flight is late, add Old Cairo or the Khan el-Khalili bazaar.

Can you fit Abu Simbel into 7 days? Only by stretching. The road trip from Aswan takes about 3 to 3.5 hours each way, so the excursion fills most of a day. That eats a full cruise day. If Abu Simbel is a must, choose a 10-day plan or book the shorter flight option.

A Delta tour that matches this plan

The Treasures of the Pharaohs 7-day luxury tour (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel) follows this one-week shape, from $1105 per person. For a fully private, top-tier version, the Best of Egypt 7-day private journey runs from $8985 per person. More options sit on our 7 day Egypt tours page.

10-day Egypt itinerary: Cairo, a 4-night cruise and Abu Simbel

Ten days is the length we suggest most often to first-time visitors. You cruise the full Luxor to Aswan stretch, see Abu Simbel without cutting other sights, and finish with a free day in Cairo before flying home.

Private tour guests at Abu Simbel
Abu Simbel fits comfortably into a 10-day trip.
  1. Day 1: Arrive in Cairo. Meet-and-greet and hotel check-in.
  2. Day 2: Giza pyramids, Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The single biggest sightseeing day of the trip.
  3. Day 3: Saqqara and Old Cairo. The Step Pyramid of Djoser in the morning, then Coptic Cairo, the Citadel or the bazaar.
  4. Day 4: Fly to Luxor and board. Embark on a 4-night cruise and visit Karnak and Luxor Temple in the afternoon.
  5. Day 5: West Bank, then sail. Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple and the Colossi of Memnon before the ship sets off south.
  6. Day 6: Edfu and Kom Ombo. Two temples and an afternoon on deck.
  7. Day 7: Aswan. Philae Temple, the High Dam and a felucca or Nubian village visit.
  8. Day 8: Abu Simbel. Disembark and make the trip to Abu Simbel by road or by air. Overnight in Aswan.
  9. Day 9: Fly back to Cairo. A light afternoon: shopping, a Nile felucca, or simply rest.
  10. Day 10: Depart.

Want the train instead? Replace the Day 4 flight with the overnight sleeper from Giza on the evening of Day 3. You arrive in Luxor the next morning and keep the rest of the plan as it is.

A Delta tour that matches this plan

Delta’s CHEOPS 10-day tour with Abu Simbel and a Nile cruise follows this structure, from $1080 per person. A five-star version, the Sun Ray 10-day luxury tour, starts from $3060 per person. Compare every version on our 10 day Egypt tours page.

14-day Egypt itinerary: Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and the Red Sea

Two weeks lets you slow down and finish at the beach. This plan uses a 3-night cruise from Aswan to Luxor, adds a separate night in Aswan for Abu Simbel and two hotel nights in Luxor, then crosses the Eastern Desert by road to the Red Sea coast.

Red Sea coast in Egypt
Two weeks leave time for a Red Sea finish.
  1. Day 1: Arrive in Cairo.
  2. Day 2: Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
  3. Day 3: Saqqara and Dahshur. The Step Pyramid, the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid, with far fewer crowds than Giza.
  4. Day 4: Islamic and Coptic Cairo. The Citadel, Khan el-Khalili and the old churches. Alexandria works as an alternative day trip.
  5. Day 5: Fly to Aswan. Afternoon visit to Philae Temple. Hotel night in Aswan.
  6. Day 6: Abu Simbel, then board. Early excursion to Abu Simbel and embark on your cruise on return.
  7. Day 7: Kom Ombo and Edfu. Sailing day with temple stops.
  8. Day 8: Arrive in Luxor. Karnak and Luxor Temple.
  9. Day 9: West Bank and hotel check-in. Disembark, explore the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple, then move to a Luxor hotel.
  10. Day 10: A free Luxor day. An optional sunrise balloon flight, the Valley of the Queens or Medinet Habu, or a Dendera and Abydos excursion.
  11. Day 11: Road transfer to the Red Sea. Check in at a resort in Hurghada or nearby.
  12. Days 12–13: Beach and snorkeling. Rest days, a boat trip to the reefs, or diving.
  13. Day 14: Fly to Cairo and depart.

A Delta tour that matches this plan

The Royal Egypt 14-day luxury tour with a Nile cruise, Abu Simbel and the Red Sea covers the same ground, from $7597 per person. Families can look at the dahabiya-based 14-day Egypt family tour, from $7600 per person. See all two-week options on our 14 day Egypt tours page.

The three plans side by side

Plan Nights in Cairo Nights on the Nile Abu Simbel Red Sea Domestic flights
7 days / 6 nights 3 3 (Aswan to Luxor) Optional, tight No 2
10 days / 9 nights 4 4 (Luxor to Aswan) + 1 Aswan hotel Yes, Day 8 No 2 (or 1 plus sleeper train)
14 days / 13 nights 4 3 (Aswan to Luxor) + 1 Aswan and 2 Luxor hotel nights Yes, Day 6 3 nights 2, plus a road transfer

What does each itinerary cost?

Delta’s matching tours above range from $1080 to $8985 per person, and that spread comes down to hotel and ship category, not the number of sights. A 10-day trip on deluxe ships can cost less than a 7-day trip in top-tier hotels. Our breakdown of how much an Egypt tour costs per person explains what drives the price and where you can save.

Which itinerary should first-time visitors choose?

Pick 7 days if your vacation time is fixed and you are happy with early starts. Choose 10 days if you want Abu Simbel and evenings that feel relaxed rather than rushed. Go for 14 days if you want a beach, travel with children who need downtime, or simply prefer two nights in most places.

Whatever the length, keep three rules in mind. Do not land on a long-haul flight and plan heavy sightseeing the same day. Leave a buffer day in Cairo before an international departure. And treat each domestic flight as a half day, not an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days enough for Egypt?

Yes, for Cairo, Giza and a 3-night Nile cruise between Aswan and Luxor. You will need two domestic flights and some early mornings. Abu Simbel is hard to fit without dropping something else.

How long is the flight from Cairo to Luxor?

Direct flights average about 1 hour 5 minutes, based on Skyscanner’s route data in October 2026. With transfers and check-in, plan for a half day of travel.

Is the sleeper train a good idea on a short trip?

It works best on trips of 9 days or more. The run to Luxor takes about 9.5 to 10.5 hours overnight, so you may arrive tired. On a 7-day plan, flying protects your sightseeing time.

Should I cruise from Luxor to Aswan or from Aswan to Luxor?

Both cover the same main temples. Luxor to Aswan cruises are usually 4 nights and Aswan to Luxor cruises usually 3 nights, so the direction often follows how many days you have.

Can I add the Red Sea to a 10-day trip?

Yes, but you will trade either Abu Simbel or the slower Cairo days for it. Most travelers who want two or more beach days find 12 to 14 days more comfortable.
