Tour Overview
This Luxor day trip from Marsa Alam takes you from the Red Sea coast to the temples and royal tombs of ancient Thebes and back in a single day. It is a private tour with an Egyptologist guide, it runs every day, and prices start from $129 per person.
What you will see
The day covers both banks of the Nile. On the East Bank you visit Karnak Temple, a huge temple complex that pharaohs built and enlarged over many centuries. Its Great Hypostyle Hall, a forest of tall carved columns, is the part most visitors remember.
Across the river on the West Bank, you stop at the Colossi of Memnon, two giant seated statues of Amenhotep III. Next is the Valley of the Kings, where New Kingdom pharaohs were buried in tombs cut into the rock. The last site is the Temple of Hatshepsut, built in terraces against the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari for one of the few women who ruled Egypt as pharaoh.
Your guide explains each site as you go, so the day makes sense even if you know little about Egyptian history. Lunch is at a restaurant, and there is time to look around a bazaar before the drive back.
