Who this short tour suits

Most six-day programs either skip the far south or rely on a cruise to get there. This route uses a flight to jump from Cairo to Aswan at the end of Day 2, which frees up a full day for Aswan and another for Abu Simbel. It is well suited to couples and small groups who are happy with busy days and want the widest spread of sites in under a week.

How the route works

Day 2 is the heaviest: the Giza pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, with its colossal statue of Ramses II, followed by the flight south. Aswan then gets an unhurried day at Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk and a Nubian cultural visit. Day 4 is given to Abu Simbel before you continue north to Luxor. The final touring day combines the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and Karnak, and ends with a flight back to Cairo for your last night.

Where you stay

The Cairo nights are at the Marriott Mena House, close to the pyramids, and the Luxor night is at Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa on the river. The Aswan hotel is confirmed with your booking. Since you change hotels several times in five nights, packing light makes the transfers easier. Guiding is private at every site, and private air-conditioned vehicles handle all transfers on the ground.

What you can add

Luxor Temple is not part of the base program, but it is a short visit to add on the Luxor evening; our guide to Luxor Temple explains why it is best seen after dark. If Abu Simbel is not a priority, the Egypt Unveiled 5-day journey covers Cairo and Luxor in less time. October to April is the most comfortable season, as Abu Simbel and Aswan get very hot in summer.

Tour Itinerary

Your journey begins upon arrival at Cairo International Airport, where you will be welcomed and assisted through arrival formalities before continuing by private transfer to your refined accommodation in Cairo.

Settle in and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure as you prepare to begin an extraordinary journey through the land of the pharaohs.

Begin your exploration at the legendary Giza Plateau, home to the Great Pyramid of Khufu—the last surviving Wonder of the Ancient World—alongside the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure.

With your private Egyptologist, uncover the extraordinary history behind these monumental structures, admire the Great Sphinx, and take in the spectacular panoramic views across the plateau.

Continue to the magnificent Grand Egyptian Museum, where extraordinary masterpieces spanning thousands of years of Egyptian civilization are presented within a spectacular modern setting. Discover the colossal statue of Ramses II and explore the remarkable treasures associated with King Tutankhamun.

Following your exploration, continue to the airport for your flight south to Aswan, where you will settle into Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.

Discover the distinctive beauty of Aswan, where ancient monuments, granite islands and Nubian culture meet along one of the Nile’s most beautiful stretches.

Begin at the enchanting Temple of Philae, dedicated primarily to the goddess Isis and gracefully positioned on Agilkia Island. Reached across the water, its elegant courtyards, columns and reliefs create one of southern Egypt’s most atmospheric archaeological experiences.

Continue to the Unfinished Obelisk, still resting within the ancient granite quarry where it was carved thousands of years ago, providing a fascinating insight into the techniques of ancient Egyptian stoneworkers.

Later, discover another side of Aswan with an experience of Nubian culture, where colorful architecture, traditional crafts and the warm character of southern Egypt offer a memorable contrast to the monumental sites.

Accommodation: Overnight in hotel

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.

Journey south through the Nubian landscape to the extraordinary Temples of Abu Simbel, one of Egypt’s most breathtaking archaeological sites.

Carved directly into the mountainside during the reign of Ramses II, the Great Temple is guarded by four colossal statues of the pharaoh. Step inside to discover monumental chambers and beautifully preserved reliefs celebrating kingship, devotion and royal power.

Nearby stands the elegant temple dedicated to Queen Nefertari, one of the most remarkable monuments ever created in honor of an Egyptian queen.

Beyond their ancient grandeur, Abu Simbel’s modern story is equally extraordinary: the temples were carefully relocated to higher ground during an international conservation project to protect them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.

Return to Aswan before continuing your journey to Luxor, ancient Thebes.

Accommodation: Overnight in hotel

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.

Discover the treasures of ancient Thebes, beginning on Luxor’s West Bank at the legendary Valley of the Kings. Enter selected royal tombs hidden within the desert mountains, where vibrant paintings and hieroglyphic texts reveal the ancient Egyptians’ extraordinary beliefs surrounding death and the afterlife.

Continue to the magnificent Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, dramatically built against the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari and dedicated to one of ancient Egypt’s most powerful rulers. Stop at the monumental Colossi of Memnon before crossing to Luxor’s East Bank.

Complete your exploration at the immense Karnak Temple Complex, where generations of pharaohs created an extraordinary collection of temples, obelisks, sanctuaries and monumental gateways. Walk beneath the towering columns of the Great Hypostyle Hall, one of the most impressive architectural spaces surviving from the ancient world.

Following your exploration, fly back to Cairo for your final night.
