Planning Egypt From the US

By Delta Tours EgyptLast updated 6 min read

Egypt tours from the USA begin with a nonstop flight to Cairo from New York, Newark, Washington, Chicago or Los Angeles, a tourist visa you can arrange online or buy on arrival, and a first day set aside to recover from a time change of seven hours or more. A first trip of eight to ten days covers Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and the Nile, and our packages for American travelers start at $1,240 per person.

Below you will find the practical side of the trip from the US, then a guide to which of our tours fits the vacation days and budget you have. Delta Tours Egypt is a family-run company based in Cairo and has arranged travel in Egypt since 1974.

Flights From the US to Cairo

EgyptAir flies nonstop to Cairo from five US airports. Two of them are new: Los Angeles service resumed in May 2026, and Chicago followed in June 2026, each about three times a week on the Airbus A350.

US gateway Nonstop to Cairo Good to know
New York JFK EgyptAir Convenient for the Northeast
Newark EgyptAir A second New York area option
Washington Dulles EgyptAir Convenient from the Mid-Atlantic and the South
Chicago O’Hare EgyptAir New in June 2026, around three flights a week
Los Angeles EgyptAir Resumed May 2026, around three flights a week

From other US cities, most travelers connect once in Europe or the Middle East. Book your international flights first, or send us your flight times and we will build the trip around them, because our packages do not include international airfare. On every package below, Day 1 is arrival only: we meet you at Cairo airport and drive you to your hotel, with no sightseeing until the next morning.

Visa and Passport Rules for US Citizens

US citizens need a visa for Egypt, and there are three ways to get one. These are the rules listed by the US State Department and GOV.UK as of October 2026:

  • Passport. Valid for at least six months, with one blank page.
  • e-Visa before you fly. Apply on Egypt’s official portal, visa2egypt.gov.eg, and print the approval.
  • Visa on arrival at Cairo. $30 in cash for the stamp visa, or $36 by card for the single-entry e-visa on arrival, each for 30 days.
  • Cash limit. Declare foreign currency above $10,000 when you arrive.

Visa fees and procedures change, so check the State Department’s Egypt page shortly before you travel.

Time Difference With the East and West Coasts

Egypt has its own summer time, but its clocks do not change on the same dates as American ones. For most of the year Cairo is seven hours ahead of New York, but for a few weeks in spring and autumn the gap shrinks by an hour.

Period Eastern Time Central Time Pacific Time
Early November to early March +7 hours +8 hours +10 hours
Early March to late April +6 hours +7 hours +9 hours
Late April to late October +7 hours +8 hours +10 hours
Last days of October +6 hours +7 hours +9 hours

In 2026 Egyptian summer time ends on October 30 and US daylight saving ends on November 1. A seven- to ten-hour shift eastward is the hardest part of the journey for most Americans, which is why we keep the first evening free and start the Pyramids day after a full night’s sleep.

When to Go, and How US Holidays Fit

The weather decides more than the calendar. In Luxor, average highs stay below 78°F from December to late February, January averages 72°F by day and 46°F at night, and July averages 105°F. Our prices follow the same split, with an October to April season and lower May to September rates.

US holiday window 2026 to 2027 dates How it works for Egypt
Thanksgiving Thursday, November 26, 2026 Pleasant weather. Four vacation days turn the long weekend into a nine-day break, Saturday to Sunday.
Christmas and New Year December 25 and January 1, both Fridays The coolest weeks of the year. These dates fill first, so book early.
Presidents’ Day Monday, February 15, 2027 Four vacation days give you nine days, February 13 to 21, before the heat returns.
Spring break March or April, depending on your district or college Warmer afternoons in Luxor, still on October to April prices.
Summer vacation June to August Very hot in the south, with early starts and lower prices.

Money, Power Plugs and Insurance

  • Money. The currency is the Egyptian pound. Hotels, cruise ships and larger shops take cards, but you will need cash for tips, small purchases and markets, and ATMs are the easiest way to get it. Bring some clean US dollar bills too, including $30 if you plan to pay for the visa in cash. GOV.UK notes a limit of 5,000 Egyptian pounds carried in or out of the country.
  • Power plugs. Egypt uses type C and F sockets at 230 volts and 50 Hz, while the US uses type A and B at 120 volts. You need a plug adapter, and anything that is not marked 100 to 240 volts, such as some hair dryers and straighteners, also needs a converter.
  • Travel insurance. Check whether your US health plan covers you abroad, and buy a travel policy with medical and evacuation cover if it does not. Our tour prices do not include insurance.

Which of Our Tours Suit a First Trip From the US

Most Americans arrive with eight to ten days, so these are the tours we suggest first. Prices are per person in US dollars.

Tour Days Route How you travel Hotels and ship From, per person
Queen Nefertari 8 Cairo, 3-night cruise Aswan to Luxor Sleeper train Hilton Pyramids (5*), Le Fayan (5*) $1,240 (double, Oct to Apr)
King Tut 9 Cairo, 4-night cruise Luxor to Aswan Sleeper train Hilton Pyramids (5*), Le Fayan (5*) $1,460 (double, Oct to Apr)
Romantic Nile 10 Cairo, 4-night cruise, Abu Simbel Sleeper train, road to Abu Simbel Hilton Pyramids (5*), Le Fayan (5*) $1,626 (double, Oct to Apr)
Treasures of the Pharaohs 7 Cairo, Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Aswan, Abu Simbel Domestic flights, private car Hotels, no cruise $2,310 (2 to 4 travelers)
Ancient Egypt Revealed 8 Cairo, 4-night cruise Luxor to Aswan, Abu Simbel Flight back to Cairo Le Fayan cruise $2,375 (2 to 4 travelers)
Hathor 8 Cairo, 3-night cruise Aswan to Luxor Domestic flights Marriott Mena House (5*), MS Mayflower (5*) $2,850 (double, Oct to Apr)
Timeless Egypt 11 Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, no cruise Flights, private car to Aswan Sofitel Nile El Gezirah, Hilton Luxor, Movenpick Aswan $4,800
Royal Egypt 14 Cairo, 4-night cruise, Abu Simbel, Sharm El Sheikh Flights Four Seasons Nile Plaza, MayFair cruise, Sofitel Legend Old Cataract, Four Seasons Sharm $7,597 (double)

Around $1,240 to $1,630 per person

Queen Nefertari, King Tut and Romantic Nile use first-class sleeper trains between Cairo and the south, which keeps the price down and saves a hotel night each way. They suit travelers who do not mind a night on the train in exchange for five-star hotels in Giza and a five-star ship. Our classic Egypt tours page compares the full range.

Around $2,300 to $2,900 per person

This is where most American couples land: domestic flights instead of trains, a private English-speaking Egyptologist, and Abu Simbel on two of the three tours. Ancient Egypt Revealed and Treasures of the Pharaohs are priced by group size, so a family of four pays the same per person rate as a couple. If you only have five days, Egypt Unveiled covers Giza and Luxor from $2,357 per person for two to four travelers.

$4,800 and above

Timeless Egypt spends four days in Cairo and avoids the cruise altogether, and Royal Egypt adds four nights by the Red Sea after the sightseeing. Both appear with more options on our luxury Egypt tours page, and either can be adjusted to your dates and interests on request.

Chat on WhatsApp+20 109 002 1560

Are there nonstop flights from the US to Egypt?

Yes. EgyptAir flies nonstop to Cairo from New York JFK, Newark, Washington Dulles, Chicago O’Hare and Los Angeles. From other US cities you will usually connect once in Europe or the Middle East.

Do US citizens need a visa for Egypt?

Yes. You can apply for an e-visa online before you leave, or buy a 30-day tourist visa at Cairo airport for $30 in cash or $36 by card. Your passport needs six months of validity and a blank page.

How many days should Americans plan for Egypt?

Plan on eight to ten days on the ground for Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and a Nile cruise, and add the long flights at each end. With only five or six days, focus on Cairo and Luxor.

How much does an Egypt tour from the USA cost?

Our tours start at $1,240 per person for the 8-day Queen Nefertari in a double room from October to April, and reach $7,597 for the 14-day Royal Egypt Tour. International flights are extra.

Are flights from the US included in your Egypt tours?

No. Our packages begin and end at Cairo airport with private transfers, so you book the transatlantic flights and we fit the itinerary to your arrival and departure times.

Can I pay with US dollars in Egypt?

Everyday prices are in Egyptian pounds, so you will need local currency for tips, taxis and markets. Dollars are useful for the cash visa on arrival and as a backup.

What is the best time of year to visit Egypt from the US?

October to April is the most comfortable period, which takes in Thanksgiving, the winter holidays and Presidents’ Day. June to August is much hotter in Luxor and Aswan but costs less on our tours.

Is the sightseeing private on your tours?

Yes. Sightseeing on our packages is private with an English-speaking guide, and luxury tours such as Hathor, Treasures of the Pharaohs and the Royal Egypt Tour include a private Egyptologist.
