Egypt tours from Australia make the most sense as one longer trip rather than a short add-on: the journey to Cairo takes most of a day in each direction, so Australian travellers usually plan ten days or more on the ground. Our private packages pair Cairo with Luxor, Aswan and a Nile cruise or a hotel-based route, and several add Abu Simbel, Alexandria or the Red Sea. All tour prices on this page are in US dollars, per person.
The long journey shapes every other decision, so this guide starts with routings and recovery, moves through the visa, time zones, school holidays, money and power points, and ends with the tours that justify a long-haul trip from Australia.
Flights from Australia to Cairo connect through a hub, and the simplest routings change planes once in the Gulf. These carriers sell one-stop itineraries to Cairo from the cities shown:
| Airline | Connects in | Australian cities with Cairo itineraries |
|---|---|---|
| Emirates | Dubai | Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth |
| Qatar Airways | Doha | Sydney, Brisbane, Perth |
| Etihad Airways | Abu Dhabi | Sydney, Melbourne |
On published Emirates schedules, Sydney to Cairo takes roughly 20 to 26 hours door to door, depending on the layover in Dubai, and Melbourne and Brisbane fall within a similar range. Perth is the shortest run, with some connections under 18 hours. Schedules change by season, so compare total journey time as well as fare: a two-hour connection and a six-hour one can cost about the same.
Smartraveller, the Australian Government’s advisory service, states that you must pay for a tourist visa to enter Egypt, and that the fee on arrival is paid with US dollars in cash or a non-Egyptian credit card. In practice that means US$30 in cash for the stamp visa, or US$36 by card for the digital visa on arrival that Cairo airport has sold since 1 August 2026. Egypt also runs an official e-visa portal at visa2egypt.gov.eg, which asks you to apply at least seven days before departure. Smartraveller also notes that many countries expect a passport with at least six months of validity, so renew before booking if yours is close. Rules can change, so read the current Smartraveller page for Egypt shortly before you fly.
Egypt keeps standard time (UTC+2) through its winter and switches to summer time (UTC+3) for roughly six months, from late April until the night of the last Thursday in October. New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT use daylight saving from 4 October 2026 to 4 April 2027, while Queensland and Western Australia do not. During the main touring season the gaps look like this:
| Your city | November to March | May to September |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra | Egypt is 9 hours behind | Egypt is 7 hours behind |
| Brisbane | Egypt is 8 hours behind | Egypt is 7 hours behind |
| Perth | Egypt is 6 hours behind | Egypt is 5 hours behind |
In practice, a 9am start in Cairo during an Australian summer is 6pm in Sydney, which makes evening calls home from Egypt easy and morning calls awkward.
The timing works in your favour. Egypt’s sightseeing season runs from October to April, which is also the period our main package prices cover, and that window takes in the whole Australian summer break. In New South Wales, for example, the 2026 to 2027 summer holidays run from 18 December to 27 January in the Eastern Division, and the autumn break runs from 6 to 16 April 2027, still inside the cooler months. A family can fit a ten- or fourteen-day tour into either break with days to spare for the flights. Other states set their own term dates, so check your school calendar, and see our guide to the best season to visit Egypt for month-by-month conditions.
Our tours open with an arrival day, but after 20 hours in transit many Australians find that one quiet day is not quite enough. Our suggestion is to book an extra night in Cairo before the tour begins, so the Giza day does not land on your first real morning in the country. A few other habits help:
Money. Egypt’s currency is the Egyptian pound. Smartraveller notes that well-established hotels and resorts accept cards and that ATMs are available in most established areas. You may carry up to EGP 5,000 in cash into or out of Egypt, and foreign currency over US$10,000 must be declared. Our tour prices are set in US dollars, so your bank will convert from Australian dollars at its own rate when you pay. Small Egyptian notes are useful for tips and market purchases.
Power. Egypt uses plug types C and F at 230 volts and 50 Hz. Australian appliances run on the same voltage, so you only need a plug adapter, not a converter.
Because the flights take so long, we suggest Australians look first at our ten- to fourteen-day packages, where the time on the ground justifies the journey. On every one of them the sightseeing is private with an English-speaking guide and your transfers are arranged for you; the tour pages set out the remaining inclusions in full.

Yes. Smartraveller says you must pay for a tourist visa to enter. At the airport that is US$30 in cash or US$36 by card at Cairo, and Egypt’s official e-visa site (visa2egypt.gov.eg) takes applications at least seven days before travel.
October to April is the cooler sightseeing season, and it covers the Australian summer school holidays as well as the NSW autumn break in April. Our main package prices are set for this period.
Given the flight time, ten days or more on the ground is a sensible minimum, and we suggest adding a spare night in Cairo before the tour to recover from jet lag.
No. All our tour prices are in US dollars per person; Cheops, for example, is $1,260 per person in a double room from October to April. Your card provider converts the payment to Australian dollars at its own rate.
No. Egypt’s sockets take type C and F plugs at 230 volts, the same voltage as at home, so an adapter is all you need.
