Cairo skyline, Cairo Tower and feluccas sailing on the Nile

This Cairo travel guide gives you the short version first: allow three to four full days, spend one on the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, one on Islamic Cairo and the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, and one on Coptic Cairo and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. Things to do in Cairo

These are the places that belong on a first itinerary, grouped so you can plan by area rather than crossing the city repeatedly.

Giza

  • The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Arrive at opening time to avoid heat and crowds. Since 2025 visitors enter through a new gate on the Cairo-Fayoum road, and a shuttle bus links the main viewpoints. See our Giza Pyramids complex guide.
  • The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Fully open since 4 November 2025, with the complete Tutankhamun collection and Khufu’s boats. It is about 2 km from the Pyramids.

Central and Islamic Cairo

  • The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square. Open since 1902 and still packed with Old Kingdom statues, Middle Kingdom jewelry and finds from Tanis.
  • The Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. The best city viewpoint on a clear day.
  • Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifai mosques. Two monumental mosques that face each other below the Citadel.
  • Al-Muizz Street and Khan el-Khalili. A walk through medieval Cairo ending in the old bazaar.

Old Cairo

  • Coptic Cairo. The Hanging Church, the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, the Ben Ezra Synagogue and the Coptic Museum, all within a few streets.
  • The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC). In Fustat, home to the Royal Mummies Hall with 20 royal mummies of kings and queens.

Beyond the city

  • Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur. The Step Pyramid of Djoser and the Bent and Red Pyramids, quieter than Giza. Read our Saqqara guide.
  • A felucca ride on the Nile. An easy late-afternoon break between museum days.

Which Cairo museum should you visit?

Museum Location Best for Time to allow
Grand Egyptian Museum Giza, near the Pyramids Tutankhamun and the big picture of pharaonic Egypt Half a day at least; a full day if you want depth
Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Downtown A dense historic collection in its original 1902 building 2 to 3 hours
NMEC Fustat, Old Cairo The Royal Mummies and Egypt’s history across all periods 2 hours

If you have time for only one, choose the GEM. Its published hours are 9am to 6pm daily, with later closing at 9pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and tickets are sold online through the official ticketing site rather than at the door. Check both before you go, as they can change. Our Grand Egyptian Museum guide explains how to plan a visit.

Cairo or Giza: where to stay

Greater Cairo is huge, and traffic decides how much you see in a day. Choose your base around your sightseeing plan rather than the hotel photos.

Area Strengths Drawbacks Best for
Giza (near the Pyramids) Pyramid views, early starts at the plateau, close to the GEM Long drives to Islamic and Coptic Cairo; fewer restaurants One or two nights focused on the Pyramids and the GEM
Garden City and the Nile Corniche Large Nile-view hotels, central location Heavy traffic at peak hours Most first-time visitors, luxury stays
Zamalek (Gezira Island) Leafy streets, cafés, restaurants, galleries Fewer large hotels Travelers who like to walk out in the evening
Downtown Walk to the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir Noisy; hotel quality varies widely Budget travelers and short stays
Heliopolis and New Cairo Near Cairo International Airport, modern hotels Far from the main sights Late arrivals and early departures

Many travelers split their stay: one or two nights in Giza, then two or three by the Nile. For Pyramid-view options, see our guide to hotels with a Pyramid view in Cairo. For the Nile side, the Four Seasons at Nile Plaza in Garden City and the Sofitel Cairo Nile El Gezirah on Gezira Island are central choices.

How many days do you need in Cairo?

  • Two days: possible, but you will choose between Islamic and Coptic Cairo.
  • Three days: the right minimum for the Pyramids, the GEM and the historic districts.
  • Four days: adds Saqqara and Dahshur or a slower museum day.
  • Five days: room for a day trip to Alexandria, food tours or shopping.

A simple three-day Cairo itinerary

  1. Day 1, Giza: the Pyramids and Sphinx in the morning, lunch nearby, then the Grand Egyptian Museum in the afternoon.
  2. Day 2, Islamic Cairo and Downtown: the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, then the Citadel, Sultan Hassan Mosque and an evening walk along Al-Muizz Street to Khan el-Khalili.
  3. Day 3, Old Cairo and the Nile: Coptic Cairo in the morning, the NMEC after lunch, and a felucca ride at sunset.

Delta Tours Egypt runs these as private day tours with an Egyptologist guide, including the Pyramids day tour, the Grand Egyptian Museum and Pyramids tour, the Giza, Saqqara and Dahshur pyramids tour and the Old Cairo and Citadel tour. If you only have a few days in the city, the Taste of Egypt 4-day Cairo package covers the essentials.

Best time to visit Cairo

October to April is the easiest time for sightseeing. January is the coolest month, with average highs near 19°C (66°F) and lows around 10°C (50°F), so bring a warm layer for mornings and evenings. July is the hottest, with average highs around 35°C (95°F); in summer, start early, take a break indoors at midday and save museums for the afternoon. Rain is rare.

During Ramadan, daytime is quieter and some sites and shops keep shorter hours, while evenings become busy and social. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, depending on the moon sighting.

Getting around Cairo

  • Private car and driver: the most efficient way to sightsee, especially for Giza, Saqqara and the GEM.
  • Metro: cheap and fast for some routes, for example to Sadat station under Tahrir Square or Mar Girgis station for Coptic Cairo and the NMEC. It does not serve the Pyramids or the GEM directly.
  • Ride-hailing apps: Uber, Careem, inDrive and DiDi all operate in Cairo and are handy for restaurants and evenings.
  • Walking: good within Zamalek, Downtown, Coptic Cairo and Al-Muizz Street, but not between districts.

Plan each day around one part of the city. Crossing from Giza to Islamic Cairo and back in a single day costs a lot of time in traffic.

Arriving in Cairo

Cairo International Airport lies about 15 km northeast of central Cairo, and there is no metro or rail link to the city, so you will travel by car, taxi or ride-hailing app. Transfer times vary a lot with the hour and your hotel’s location; Giza is the longest run. Sphinx International Airport, on the western side of the city along the Cairo-Alexandria desert road, now handles international flights from some airlines, including routes from London, and is the closer airport for a Giza stay. Check which airport your ticket uses before arranging a transfer.

What to eat in Cairo

Try koshari (rice, lentils, pasta and spiced tomato sauce), ful medames (stewed fava beans), taameya (Egyptian falafel made with fava beans), molokhia, stuffed vegetables, grilled meats and fresh baladi bread. For dessert, look for om ali and basbousa. Mix casual local places with a Nile-view dinner or two.

Practical tips for Cairo

  • Dress modestly in the historic districts and bring a scarf for mosques; women cover their hair in mosques and everyone removes their shoes.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with a firm sole; the plateau and old streets are uneven.
  • Carry small Egyptian pound notes for tips and small purchases.
  • Agree on prices before camel rides, horse carriages or informal guiding.
  • Do not photograph police, military sites or people without asking.
  • Drink bottled water, and use sun protection from spring to autumn.

Day trips from Cairo

Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur

Saqqara holds the Step Pyramid of Djoser, generally regarded as the earliest of Egypt’s large stone pyramids, plus decorated tombs. Memphis was the early capital, and Dahshur has the Bent and Red Pyramids. Together they fill a day and show how pyramid building developed before Giza.

Alexandria

Egypt’s Mediterranean city makes a long but rewarding day trip by road. A full day lets you see the catacombs, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Citadel of Qaitbay. Our Alexandria day tour covers the highlights with a private guide.

Combining Cairo with the rest of Egypt

Most visitors pair Cairo with Luxor and Aswan, either by a Nile cruise or by flying between cities. Delta’s budget 9-day Cairo and Nile cruise packages start from $1,250 per person sharing between October and April, and the classic King Tut 9-day tour is $1,460. Browse all options on our Pyramids and Nile cruise tours page.
