At Dahshur the Bent Pyramid shows where a slope had to be changed halfway up, while the Red Pyramid next to it is the first true smooth-sided pyramid. At Saqqara the Step Pyramid of Djoser is the stone prototype. Seeing them before the Giza plateau makes the Great Pyramid far more meaningful.
