How the trip fits together
The route runs south to north. After a full day at the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, you board the overnight train in the evening, which saves both a hotel night and a flight. You wake in Aswan and join the cruise straight away, visiting the High Dam and Philae Temple that afternoon. The boat then sails downstream with stops at Kom Ombo and Edfu, and Luxor gives you Karnak, Luxor Temple and the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank before you leave the ship.
From Luxor a bus takes you across the desert to Hurghada, a drive of about four hours, and you return to Cairo by bus at the end of your beach stay. Day 2 is the longest of the trip, with two major sites before the train, so plan on an early start.
Who it suits
This is a good fit if you want to see the Nile Valley properly on a limited budget and do not mind long road journeys. Meals on the cruise and at the Hurghada resort are covered, which keeps daily spending predictable. If you would rather skip the train or the bus back to Cairo, ask about swapping in flights when you book; that changes the price.
Easy changes
- Add Abu Simbel by road as an optional excursion while the cruise is in Aswan.
- Extend the beach stay if you want more than a short break on the Red Sea.
- Upgrade the Cairo hotel or the cruise ship for a more comfortable version of the same route.
When to go
October to April is cooler for Aswan and Luxor and costs $1,410 per person in a double room. May to September is hot in the south but cheaper at $1,220 per person in a double, and the Red Sea is warm for swimming.
