Tour Overview

This nine-day program builds a classic Egypt trip around a single afternoon. On August 2, 2027, a total solar eclipse passes over Luxor, and the itinerary is timed so you are there for it. Around it you get Cairo, Aswan, Abu Simbel and three nights on a Nile cruise.

Luxor lies close to the center of the path of totality. NASA’s eclipse data gives the city about 6 minutes and 20 seconds of totality, beginning around 1 p.m. local time. The Sun will be almost overhead, so nearby walls and hills will not block the view. Few eclipse sites anywhere combine such a long totality with a city full of ancient temples.

How the trip is shaped

You start in Cairo with the Pyramids, Saqqara and the Grand Egyptian Museum. A domestic flight then takes you south to Aswan for the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Philae Temple. The next day covers Abu Simbel before you board the cruise. On board, you visit the river temples of Kom Ombo and Edfu, then the West Bank of Luxor.

Eclipse day is spent on the East Bank, at Karnak and Luxor Temple. The exact viewing spot is confirmed before travel. You then fly back to Cairo for the Egyptian Museum, the Hanging Church, Khan el-Khalili and Al-Muizz Street before flying home.

Who it suits

This tour suits first-time visitors who want the main sites of Egypt and the eclipse in one trip. The cruise gives you a cabin and full-board meals for three nights, which is useful in August heat. An English-speaking Egyptologist guides the sightseeing, and the domestic flights from Cairo to Aswan and Luxor to Cairo are included. Accommodation combines Cairo, Aswan and Luxor hotels with the cruise. Hotel and ship names are confirmed before travel.

Before you go

Upper Egypt is extremely hot in early August, and totality falls near midday. Plan for shade, water and sun protection. You will also need eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard; ask our team about them when you book. The start date is fixed on booking so that Day 7 lands on August 2. Deposit and cancellation terms are available on request.

The tour is priced from $4,445 per person. The final price depends on the season, cabin and room type, and the size of your group.

Tour Itinerary

You are met at Cairo International Airport and taken to your hotel.

In the evening you attend the Sound and Light Show at Giza, where the pyramids and the Sphinx are lit up after dark as their history is narrated.

Your Egyptologist guide leads a full day of sightseeing. You visit the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, home to the Tutankhamun collection.

You also visit Saqqara, the vast burial ground of ancient Memphis and site of the Step Pyramid of Djoser. The night is spent in Cairo.

You fly from Cairo to Aswan. Sightseeing starts at the High Dam, which created Lake Nasser, and continues to the Unfinished Obelisk, still lying in its ancient granite quarry.

The day ends at Philae Temple, the island sanctuary of the goddess Isis. You stay overnight in Aswan.

Today is dedicated to Abu Simbel, where Ramesses II carved two great temples into the rock. The temples were moved to higher ground in the 1960s to save them from Lake Nasser.

Afterward you board your Nile cruise ship, which is your base for the next three nights with full-board meals.

The cruise brings you to two of the best-preserved temples on the Nile. Kom Ombo is a double temple shared by the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Haroeris.

At Edfu you visit the Temple of Horus, one of the most complete temples surviving from ancient Egypt.

You spend the day on Luxor’s West Bank. In the Valley of the Kings, you enter tombs cut for the pharaohs of the New Kingdom.

You continue to the terraced Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari and stop at the Colossi of Memnon, two huge seated statues of Amenhotep III.

Eclipse day. You explore Karnak, the largest temple complex of ancient Egypt, and Luxor Temple in the center of the city.

The total solar eclipse takes place over Luxor this day, with about six minutes and twenty seconds of totality. The exact viewing spot is confirmed before you travel. Keep your certified eclipse glasses on during the partial phases and remove them only during totality.

You fly from Luxor back to Cairo. The afternoon starts at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.

You then visit the Hanging Church in Coptic Cairo and finish in the old city at Khan el-Khalili and along Al-Muizz Street.

You are transferred to Cairo International Airport for your flight home.
