Tour Overview
This private day in Cairo pairs two very different eras. In the morning you ride a golf cart through Al-Darb Al-Ahmar, one of the oldest quarters of Islamic Cairo. Later you meet the pharaohs themselves in the Royal Mummies Hall.
The golf cart sets off from Al-Azhar Park, a green space built on what was once a huge rubbish mound beside the historic city walls. From there you roll through narrow lanes lined with Mamluk mosques, old houses and craft workshops. Riding means you cover more ground than on foot, and you can hear your Egyptologist explain each building as you go.
After lunch at a good local restaurant, you visit the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat. Its Royal Mummies Hall holds the mummies of famous kings and queens, among them Ramses II and Hatshepsut. They were moved there in 2021 in a public procession through Cairo. The rest of the museum traces Egyptian life from prehistory to modern times.
The tour runs every day and suits travelers who have seen the Pyramids and want a closer look at the city. It also works for those who prefer less walking. Hotel transfers in a private air-conditioned vehicle, your guide, lunch, entrance fees, bottled water and taxes are included. Tips are extra. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, since you pass active mosques. Women may want a light scarf on hand.
Prices start from $125 per person. The rate per person drops as the group grows, from one traveler up to six.
