Tour Overview

On Monday, August 2, 2027, the Moon’s shadow crosses Egypt and turns midday into twilight along a narrow band of the country. This eight-day program places you inside that band at Siwa Oasis, in the Western Desert, and wraps the eclipse in a full week of sightseeing between Cairo, Giza and Siwa. It runs from 30 July to 6 August 2027.

Siwa sits well inside the path of totality, south of the central line. Using NASA’s path data and the Besselian elements published by EclipseWise, we calculate about five and a half minutes of totality for the oasis. The exact length shifts by a few seconds depending on where you stand, and the group watches from a dedicated viewing point in the Siwa desert. Open desert means a wide horizon, no city lights and almost no buildings in the way.

Why pair Siwa with Cairo

Siwa is one of Egypt’s most isolated settlements, and it rewards the effort of getting there. Its mud-brick Shali fortress, salt lakes and palm groves feel very different from the Nile Valley. The Temple of Amun on the hill of Aghurmi is where Alexander the Great is said to have consulted the oracle in 331 BC. Visiting it on eclipse afternoon gives the day an extra layer of history.

Cairo bookends the trip. The first days cover the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum, plus an evening at the Pyramids Sound and Light Show. After returning from the desert, a final touring day takes in the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, the Hanging Church, Khan el-Khalili and Al-Muizz Street.

Who this trip suits

The program fits travelers who want the eclipse and a real taste of Egypt in about a week. It also suits anyone who prefers a desert setting to a busy city on eclipse day. An English-speaking Egyptologist guides the touring days, and road transport runs from Cairo to Siwa and back in air-conditioned vehicles. You stay four nights in Cairo and three in Siwa, all with breakfast. Hotel names are confirmed before travel.

Planning notes

August in the Western Desert is very hot, and totality falls close to midday. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, light long sleeves, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. Eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard are essential for the partial phases; ask our team about them when you book. Deposit and cancellation terms are available on request.

The tour is priced from $3,900 per person. The final price depends on room type and the size of your group.

Tour Itinerary

Our representative meets you at Cairo International Airport, helps you through arrival formalities and takes you to your hotel.

In the evening you head to Giza for the Sound and Light Show, where the pyramids and the Sphinx are lit against the night sky while their story is told. Dinner follows.

Your Egyptologist guide takes you to the Giza plateau to see the three great pyramids up close and the Sphinx below them.

Later you visit the Grand Egyptian Museum, which holds a vast collection of ancient objects, including the treasures of Tutankhamun. You return to your Cairo hotel for the night.

Today you leave Cairo and travel to Siwa in an air-conditioned vehicle. The road crosses the Western Desert, and the landscape grows emptier as you go.

You arrive in the oasis and check in to your Siwa hotel, ready for the eclipse the next day.

This is eclipse day. The group goes out to the dedicated viewing point in the Siwa desert to watch the Moon cover the Sun. Wear your certified eclipse glasses through the partial phases and remove them only during totality.

Once the Sun is back, you visit the Temple of Amun, home of the famous oracle, and the Mountain of the Dead, a hill lined with rock-cut tombs. You stop at Cleopatra’s Spring, a natural pool fed by spring water, and end at the Shali fortress, the old mud-brick town at the heart of Siwa.

A slower day spent outside the town. You see the salt lakes around the oasis, where the water and white crusts stand out against the desert, along with the wider Siwa landscape of palm groves and sand.

You spend a final night in Siwa.

You leave Siwa and travel back across the Western Desert to Cairo, where you check in to your hotel for the night.

The last touring day starts at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, whose collection traces the country’s history from prehistory to the modern era.

Next is the Hanging Church in Coptic Cairo. The day ends in the old city at the Khan el-Khalili bazaar and along Al-Muizz Street, lined with historic mosques and houses.

After breakfast, you are transferred to Cairo International Airport for your flight home.
