Tour Overview
Medieval Cairo still stands in the lanes of Al-Darb Al-Ahmar, the district that runs south from Al-Azhar toward Bab El Wazir. This day tour takes you through its gates, mosques and workshops with a guide who knows the quarter well. It suits travelers who have already seen the pyramids and want to understand the Islamic city that grew up beside the Nile.
The day starts at Al-Azhar Park, a large green space laid out on the eastern edge of the old city. From there a golf cart carries you to Bab Zuweila, one of the surviving gates of Fatimid Cairo. Its twin towers once marked the southern entrance to the walled city, and they remain a landmark of the area.
The rest of the visit is on foot. You step inside the Mosque of Salih Tala’i, a Fatimid building that faces the gate, and the Mamluk-era Mosque of Qijmas al-Ishaqi, known for its fine stone and marble work. You also follow a stretch of the old city walls. Later there is a break for lunch and free time at a handicraft market, where local artisans sell their work.
Practical notes
Your guide collects you from your hotel in Cairo and brings you back at the end of the day. The tour runs every day. Transfers, guiding and entrance fees are covered, while tips are not. Wear comfortable shoes, since much of the route is on uneven streets. Women may want a scarf for the mosque visits, and modest dress is wise for everyone. A per-person price drops as more people join your group. Prices start from $96 per person.
